The Books

Plot

The novel begins in the Shire, as Frodo Baggins inherits the Ring from Bilbo, his uncle. Gandalf the Grey, a Wizard, learns some of the Ring's history and advises Frodo to take the Ring away from the Shire. Frodo leaves with Sam, Marry and Pippin, to help him. On the journey, the run into many difficulties and are persued by the Ringwraiths. Various characters give aid along the way, including Tom Bombadil and a disguised Aragorn, Isildur's heir and rightful king of Gondor. Eventually they come to Rivendell. The council decides to destroy the Ring in Mordor. Frodo volunteers to take the Ring, and a "Fellowship of the Ring" is chosen to accompany him. The company is forced to travel through the Mines of Moria. Gandalf fight a Balrog and falls into a deep chasm. The others escape and take refuge in Lothlorien. With boats and gifts from Galadriel, the company then travel down the great river Anduin. There, Boromir attemps to take the Ring from Frodo, who then breaks from the Fellowship and continues the trek to Mordor accompanied only by Sam. Saruman's Orcs kill Boromir and kidnap Merry and Pippin. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas pursue the Orcs and encounter Gandalf, who is now "Gandalf the White". Merry and Pippin escape from the Orcs and find themselves in Fangorn where they meet nad befriend the tree-like Ents. Gandalf frees Theoden King of Rohan from Saruman's control. Theoden decides to fight Saruman's forces and makes his stand in the Helm's Deep. After much fighting at the Helm's Deep, the Rohirrim mount a final charge and drive the Orcs into a forest of Huorns, where they disappear, just as Gandalf arrives. The Ents destroy Saruman's remaining forces at Isengard. Gandald strips Saruman of his rank and most of his power and the Ents imprison him. Pippin looks into a seeing-stone, inadvertently alerting Sauron to Pippin's location. Gandalf takes Pippin to Gondor. Frodo and Sam capture Gollum and force him to guide them to Mordor. Gollum betrays Frodo by leading him to the great spider Shelob in the tunnels of Cirith Ungol. Frodo is left unconscious by Shelob's bite, but Sam fights her off using Sting and the vial of Earendil's star. Sam, believing Frodo to be dead, takes the Ring, and Frodo is carried to the tower of Cirith Ungol by Orcs. Sauron begins his military assault upon Gondor. Gandalf arrives at Minas Tirith with Pippin to alert the city of the impending attack. Pippin becomes one of the Guards of the Citadel, while Merry becomes esquire to the King of Rohan. Aragon takes Gimli and Legolas through the Paths of the Dead and rises an undead army of oath breakers. He uses these in turn to defeat the armies of the Corsairs of Umbar in southern Gondor, enabling the region's forces to sail to the battle at Minas Tirith. Denetor, Ruling Steward of Gondor, comitts suicide. With the timely aid of Rohan's cavalry and Aragorn's remforcements a significant portion of Sauron's army is defeated. Sam rescues Frodo from captivity. They make their way through Mordor and reach Mount Doom. In the final battle at the Black GAte of Mordor, the alliance of Gondor and Rohan fight desperately against Sauron's armies. At the edge of the Cracks of Doom Frodo claims the Ring for himself and puts it on his finger. Gollum struggles with Frodo for the Ring, bites off Frodo'sd then falls into the fire, taking the Ring with him. The Ring is destroyed. Sauron dies ans the war ends. Aragorn in crowned King of Gondor and marries Arwen. Saruman escapes his captivity in Orthanc and enslaves The Shire. The returnong hobbits overthrow him in the Battle of Bywater. Sam helps to restore oder. Sam marries Rosie Cotton. Frodo remains wounded in body and spirit and accompanied by Bilbo and Gandalf, sails west over the Sea to the Undying Lands, where he can find peace. Sam, Merry, and Pippn retun. After Rosie's death Sam leaves behind the Red Book of Westmarch with his daughter and crosses over the Sea, the last of the Ring bearers. The

The Films

The trilogy consists of 3 films: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. It is based on the three-volume book 'The Lord of the Rings' by J. R. R. Tolkien.
The films were directed by Peter Jackson and distributed by New Line Cinema. The budget amounts of 280 million dollars. The entire project took 8 years . The shooting of the films went off in New Zealand. Each film in the trilogy had Special Extended Editions, relaesed on DVD a year after the theatrical releases.
The trilogy was a great financial success - highest-grossing films of all the time. The films were critically acclaimed, winning 17 out of 30 Academy Awards nominated in total, and received wide praise for the cast and for the innovative speacial effects.
